Conference Theme: A Swell of Co-Creation for the Future in Japan's Food Supply Areas

In Hokkaido, there are many facilities that produce biogas by fermenting dairy cattle manure. Since this biogas contains high levels of methane gas, it is attracting attention as a carbon-neutral energy source. Currently, the business of burning this biogas in generators and selling the electricity is being conducted, but it is dependent on government subsidies. Therefore, there is a need to find a way to use biogas for purposes other than power generation, i.e., to convert it into useful chemical substances. In this presentation, I will explain the technology we have recently developed to produce liquid fuels, methanol and formic acid, from methane gas at room temperature and pressure, and introduce our efforts for social implementation as a carbon-neutral recycling-oriented dairy farming system in cooperation with industry, academia, and government.

The company was the first in the world to successfully develop a technology to convert methane and air into methanol and formic acid at room temperature and pressure. In July 2020, the company succeeded in producing methanol and formic acid from biogas, and is now further developing the technology for its social implementation.
