Here's how far we've come! Automation in Life Science Research

Within the 10th Annual Conference of the Association of Hyperdifferent Fields, March 5-6, 2021 (Friday and Saturday), hosted by Liverness, a panel discussion, "We've Come This Far! Automation in Life Science Research" (session partner: Inner Resource Inc.

In research in the life science field, where human hands-on experimentation has been the norm, the trend toward automating experiments through the use of robots is spreading. In this field, where the results have sometimes been greatly affected by small tricks in human manipulation and judgment, automation has the potential to create an environment in which a large amount of experimental data can be obtained under the same conditions. In this session, we invite researchers who are involved in the automation of experiments in the context of experimental manipulation and data interpretation to discuss how far automation has come, the hurdles to further automation, and what life science research will look like when automation is advanced. The following topics will be discussed.

We will have a program of discussions among researchers, start-ups, and large companies from a variety of perspectives, not limited to the themes of this session.

He runs a laboratory at RIKEN. He is also a specially-appointed professor at the Graduate School of Media and Governance, Keio University, an invited professor at the Graduate School of Frontier Biosciences, Osaka University, a vice president of the Whole Brain Architecture Initiative, a non-profit organization, and an innovation designer at the RIKEN Future Strategy Office. After receiving his degree from Keio SFC, he was a HFSP fellow at the Institute for Molecular Science (Berkeley, USA) before assuming his current position. He is the Principal Investigator of the "Accelerating Life Science through Robotic Biology" project of the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).

Ryuji Kato

He received his B.S. from Tohoku University in 1999, M.S. from Nara Institute of Science and Technology in 2001, and Ph.D. from Nagoya University in 2004 in Biofunctional Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering. He has been an independent associate professor at the Graduate School of Drug Discovery Science, Nagoya University since 2012, and an ISO international standardization and project leader since 2018. His research mainly focuses on engineering technologies to support regenerative medicine cell manufacturing, including AI image quality control technology for cells.

Takaaki Horinouchi

D. in Information Science from the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, Osaka University in 2011. He is also an outpatient researcher at the Artificial Intelligence Research Center, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST). Representative of the Bioinformatics Consultation Group of the Japan Society for Biological Engineering. He is also a board member of the Laboratory Automation Society of Japan. He is working on automation of analysis of adaptive evolutionary processes of microorganisms using automated pipetting machines, and autonomous cell culture using humanoid robots and AI.

D. in Science, focusing on creating new research projects between industry and young researchers, including the launch of the "Liberace Research Fund" for young researchers under the age of 40. In addition, he continues to organize the "Super Interdisciplinary Society," a place to generate new knowledge and seeds for research and development by combining individual knowledge, technology, and passion for problem solving without being bound by the framework of academia.
