Tokyo Conference】 Keynote Speeches to be made! Associate Professor Hiroshi Yabu of Tohoku University will give the second keynote speech, "Meta-bio": Using Living Organisms as a Model to Create Materials that Surpass Living Organisms

2021.12.23
[Tokyo Conference] Keynote Speech! The second keynote speech will be given by Dr. Hiroshi Yabu, Associate Professor at Tohoku University, on the topic of "Metabio," the creation of materials that surpass living organisms while using living organisms as a model.

Dr. Hiroshi Yabu, Junior Principal Investigator of Devices and Systems, Advanced Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University and Associate Professor of Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials, will give a keynote lecture on March 4, 2022, the first day of the conference of the Association for Transdisciplinary Research in Tokyo organized by LIVERNESS (March 4-5, Friday and Saturday, March 4 and 5, 2022). He will talk about his research and commercialization of "Metabio", which is to create materials that surpass living organisms while using living organisms as a model.

The Japan Society for Hyperdifferentiation Conference Tokyo 2022

Conference Theme: The Return of Knowledge - Toward the Era of Global Contribution

Date: Friday, March 4 and Saturday, March 5, 2021, 10:00-19:00

Organisms realize highly controlled manufacturing through self-organization that skillfully takes advantage of molecular characteristics. Not only is this manufacturing more eco-friendly than the top-down processing and production by humans, it is also highly functional and sophisticated. The water repellency of lotus leaves is a well-known example, but it is not realistic to attach lotus leaves to a material to give it water repellency. We are learning from the fine irregular structures created by the wax secretion of lotus leaves, which are highly water-repellent, and imitating them with artificial materials that are easy for humans to use and produce, to create materials that surpass the original.

Yabu calls this type of manufacturing "meta-bio" and has been working on the development of various materials. The catalytic electrode material modeled after heme proteins is not simply porphyrins, which are the same as those used in living organisms, but has been designed with various innovations to achieve higher catalytic performance than platinum-supported carbon (Pt/C).

His research, based on the keywords "self-assembly" and "biomimetics," covers a wide range of fields, including materials, batteries, and biotechnology, and the unconventional functional materials he has created as a result of his research are being developed into different business domains.
