Graduated from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Osaka University in 1996, and received his Doctor of Pharmacy (Osaka University) in 2001. After studying at the University of California, Berkeley, he became an assistant professor at the Institute of Medical Science, University of Tokyo in 2004. After working as an assistant professor, lecturer, and associate professor at the same institute, he became a project leader at his current affiliation in 2013, and will be the director of his current center in 2019. Other appointments include: visiting professor at the Institute of Medical Science, University of Tokyo; invited professor at the Graduate Schools of Medicine, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Dentistry, Osaka University (affiliated graduate school); visiting professor at the Graduate School of Medicine, Kobe University (affiliated graduate school); visiting professor at the School of Dentistry, Hiroshima University; and visiting professor at the Nano-Life Innovation Research Organization, Waseda University.

After completing the doctoral program, he worked as an assistant professor and lecturer at the Faculty of Science, Kitasato University, and as an assistant professor at the Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto University before becoming a specially-appointed associate professor at the Institute for Advanced Biosciences, Keio University in 2015 and a professor at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Kumamoto University in 2018. While conducting research and development, he is a researcher involved in launching joint research projects with universities and research institutions and supporting the establishment of research institutes.
