Professor Tamotsu Yoshimori of Osaka University, who has pioneered the field of autophagy together with Yoshinori Osumi, the 2016 Nobel Prize winner in Physiology or Medicine, will be the keynote speaker on March 4, 2022, the first day of the Tokyo Congress of the Association for Transdisciplinary Research, hosted by LIVANES (March 4-5, Friday and Saturday, 2022). Dr. Tamotsu Yoshimori, Professor of Osaka University, who has pioneered the field of autophagy with Dr. Yoshinori Osumi, the 2016 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, will speak under the title of "Opening New Horizons in Autophagy Research, which has been called 'Useless.

The Japan Society for Hyperdifferentiation Conference Tokyo 2022

Conference Theme: The Return of Knowledge - Toward the Era of Global Contribution

Date: Friday, March 4 and Saturday, March 5, 2021, 10:00-19:00

So-called basic research is often positioned as "useless to society. While there is no such thing as meaningless research, it is also true that in these days of rapid change, there is a tendency to demand research that can be commercialized and used in industry at an early stage. However, basic research that does not seem to be useful at first glance is a source that opens up new fields and generates new knowledge, and many researchers have accumulated their research over many years, resulting in research that is useful to society. Research that is useful to society from the start is not something that can be targeted. The field of autophagy, which is now the focus of industry, is one such research field that began with basic research. It was pioneered by a strong curiosity to clarify the mechanism of the autophagy phenomenon and to learn the physiological significance of the phenomenon.

Dr. Yoshimori, together with Dr. Osumi and others, established the dawn of the autophagy field, which Japan is leading, despite being questioned as to its usefulness. Now, he hopes to return the results of the vast amount of basic research he has accumulated to society. With the desire to "show that research that was said to be useless can be useful," we have established ventures and consortiums, and are working to implement the results of that research in society.

Mr. Yoshimori's approach to research and his thoughts on science will convey his courage and beliefs to the many researchers who face basic research with curiosity despite being asked, "What is the use? At the same time, we believe that his thoughts and thoughts on science will be a guide for researchers in academia and companies who are engaged in applied research to return the results of their research to society.
