"Future Medicine with iPS Cells (tentative)

iPS cells" became widely known after winning the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2012. Currently, its research has developed to the point where clinical trials are being conducted around the world with a view to human application. In this forum, Dr. Masayo Takahashi, who aims to establish treatments for retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa from the viewpoint of regenerative medicine using iPS cells, will talk about the current status and future of regenerative medicine, including treatments for eye diseases based on regenerative medicine using iPS cells.

<Brief Biography

D. from Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine in 1992. After working as an assistant at Kyoto University School of Medicine, he became a researcher at the Salk Institute in 1995, where he discovered the possibility of using stem cells for retinal therapy. He started clinical research on autologous iPS cell-derived retinal pigment epithelial sheet transplantation for exudative age-related macular degeneration and transplanted the first case in September 2014. In March 2017, he performed a transplantation using a suspension of retinal pigment epithelial cells derived from other iPS cells.

Conference Theme:
Creating a new axis of medicine, food, and housing - Omoroi Future Blueprint from Kansai

Osaka, known as "the kitchen of the nation," has been attracting "people, goods, and money" since the Edo period (1603-1868), and has developed through the mixing of diverse things. Even today, this culture is deeply rooted in the city. Research findings at world-class research institutes and universities and technological developments at leading Japanese companies are fusing together to create world-first discoveries. In the near future, will we be able to know our own health, prevent illness, freely obtain foodstuffs when we want to eat them, and live a comfortable, stress-free life? This forum will focus on "medicine," a field in which Kansai has an advantage, and "food and housing," a field with a unique culture, bringing together junior high and high school students, university students, researchers, and companies to discuss and create a blueprint for the future that can be called "omoroi" (omoroi).
