Forum Overview

Okinawa Prefecture is positioned as the gateway to East Asia, with major Asian cities such as Shanghai, Taipei, Hong Kong, Seoul, and Manila located within 1500 km (within 4 hours by air) of Naha Airport. From ancient times, Okinawa has traded and relayed trade with Asian countries, playing a role as a bridge to Asia and prospering. Today, Okinawa's geographical advantage is once again attracting attention as Asia's economy develops. Taking advantage of its geographical advantage of being located in the center of East Asia, we aim to establish a sustainable primary industry not only in Okinawa but also in Japan as a whole and in Asia.

In livestock management, reproductive performance is an important indicator of overall productivity, but cattle are susceptible to heat stress, and reproductive performance tends to be worse in regions with higher temperatures. However, in tropical to subtropical regions such as Southeast Asia, the need for livestock production is expected to increase in the future as the population grows. In this session, producers, clinical veterinarians, and technicians from different fields will discuss how to improve reproductive performance, which is inevitable for dairy and beef cattle production in tropical regions.

As global seafood consumption increases rapidly, sustainable fisheries and fisheries resource management, especially aquaculture, are becoming increasingly important. Japan, with its long-established fish-eating culture, possesses the world's top-level fishery technology, but the introduction of this technology to local fishery sites has not progressed well, and the number of fishery operators continues to decline due to the aging of fishery operators and lack of successors. Meanwhile, Southeast Asia faces various challenges due to the low level of technology, such as damage from infectious diseases at aquaculture sites, deterioration of water quality, and lack of feed. This session will focus on aquaculture in Okinawa, which has similar regional characteristics to Southeast Asia, and discuss the promotion of the prefecture's fisheries industry through the introduction of advanced aquaculture technology, as well as the possibility of expanding into Southeast Asia through technical assistance, while taking the rapidly developing Southeast Asian region as a market.
